The 3^3 Project: 2009 | Media
3 Things, 3 Sentences, and (hopefully) 3 People [explanation]
Here’s my three favorite things from 2009 in media.
- Infinite Jest - I read the 1037 page opus by David Foster Wallace over the summer, as a part of the Infinite Summer movement/schedule/book club. It will forever be one of those great works I’ll never forget reading and it was nice to share the experience with so many others online. The book isn’t for everyone, but DFW rewards those willing to commit and I’m glad I did.
- HBO’s Bored to Death - This show seems to have been written with me alone as the target demographic for fresh clever comedy. Considering everyone got to talking about it and it got picked up for another season, I feel significantly less alone in the world. There is much to appreciate about smart writing (Jonathan Ames), fantastic acting (Schwartzman, Danson, and Galifianakis), intimate locales (Brooklyn), and a show that doesn’t talk down to you without being dry and boring.
- fun. - I got into a LOT of music (Phoenix, Passion Pit, Jay-Z, Mountain Goats, Bowerbirds, Rural Alberta Advantage, MGMT, Airborne Toxic Event, Owl City, and much more) this year, but finding this got me through a few weeks of solid repeats. From the guy who left The Format, it’s smart, stylized, and poppy without losing its charming wit. A band called fun. should be exactly that and this is.
Your turn.
