I make it work, as do 80% of the people I know in New York. It is weird, making far less and doing so much more than my friends in other less expensive places, but a certain bonding pride comes of it.so i’ve been reading these posts people are posting. they’re some survey from NYMAG. And one of the questions is “would you live here if you made under 33,000” and one answer was to the extent of “fuck, no” and one was like under a 100k or something is poverty. what i think is funny is that no one i know makes more than 40k. I myself don’t make very much at all. and while it’s difficult I don’t think it would be a deal breaker for living in new york.
just saying. re-think what’s important and necessary.
I am one of those people she is refering to (“fuck no” was my answer).
The logic?
New York is the most expensive city in the US and I can’t image how you can eat, pay rent and do anything other than read used newspapers for $35K (which, after my tax calcuations is more like $23K)
MINUS -$15,000 in rent
MINUS - $6000 in food
= $116.00 per month to go and “have fun”
And by have fun I mean: laundry, clothing, doctors, household supplies, alcohol, clothing, gadgets, etc.
Is that really possible?
I am in all likelihood going to make 35k next year as a new college grad and will be living in New York.
According to Lovepuppy I’m not allowed to exist.
There seems to be two schools of people: those who tell me that I’ll Make It and will be All Right, and the type who say OMG HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY DO IT HOW WILL YOU LIVE???!?
I’m going to be optimistic before throwing in the towel. Yes I will be poor but I think I’ll make it. There are worse things to be than a broke-ass New Yorker!
