A Love Letter to Apple (that has nothing to do with 3G)

Inexplicably last night I had my first problem with my iPhone. Since June 29th of last year that little $600 computer only left my front left pocket to charge on my bedside and return the next morning. Together we’ve traveled the states, taken over 2459 pictures, sent a few thousand texts, handled hundreds of emails, watched countless videos, listened to more songs than I can remember, looked up sports scores and movie trivia, never got lost with Google Maps, checked the weather every morning together, processed dozens of new contacts, and liveblogged the entire near year of our partnership.

That’s why, admidst the sweat and precipation of the Sunday night (hardly our first game together) I wasn’t too worried when the bottom half of the screen wasn’t responding like it usually did, I assumed it was nothing and we’d be back to normal with a reboot and a recharge and some airing out.

We weren’t. The last row of keys on the keyboard were completely non responsive. How about you sending a text without any of those letters or a backspace? I couldn’t put together more than a few jumbled words in an email. I began to panic, allowing it still to wake me up Monday morning, distract me with music on my commute in, and comfort me with reading emails and texts I couldn’t respond to.

After work I went straight to the new Apple store on 9th ave and 14th street. Once there they put my name in the queue for the Genius bar and I jotted down a few important numbers, made one last call, and prepared for whatever the news would be.

And it wasn’t surprising in the least. Something permanent had happened to the touch screen on that streak (despite my Agent 18 hard case and protective film)  and I would need a new iPhone. Luckily my warranty was still good for another twenty days. The Genius popped out my SIM card, made the switch with a brand new iPhone, plugged my new phone into his laptop right there on the counter and in a moment’s time, I walked out of there with a smile and a brand new activated and charged iPhone for no cost whatsoever.

I sent a text and made a call, and got to where I needed to be. Once I got back tonight, I synced up my phone with my MacBook and tada - all of my numbers, contacts, pictures, bookmarks, music, videos, podcasts, and the like were magically restored and no one the wiser.

Everyone was incredibly helpful, the process painless, and the business model, supurb. I got two iPhones for the price of one, and it’s a good thing too, considering how I barely lasted 18 hours without typing capabilities. It’s been a big Apple day.

And in the time it took me to type this, my new phone is synced and ready to go, to bed, with me. Just like it always was.
