There is perhaps no more angry or damning song about this country ever written than “Born in the U.S.A.,” the song that first turned Bruce into Captain America some quarter century ago. It was a mysterious bit of smoke and mirrors from the media, because at his finest Springsteen was more pissed off and punk rock than any snot-nosed art-school kid in a swastika ever was. He did not trade in adolescent angst; he traded in the genuine desperation of men and women who would never imagine to fetishize their suffering.

Seriously, does anyone ever pay attention to the lyrics? Springsteen had originally wanted the song to sound very different but was pushed by higher-ups to repackage and ruin the song’s content.
