Going to the Movies by Yourself…

- totally awesome and confidently badass?
- or, sad and pathetic.
I felt less like a loser going in a big city like back in New York. You blend in with the crowd and you don’t have to worry about pleasing anybody else. You see what you want, sit where you want, eat what you want, it’s great.
But when you’re in Texas, and you have to drive to the movie theater, walk through the parking lot, up to the theater.. walk through the huge concession-lobby, I feel so much more self-conscious.
My Uncle said he’d go to the movies by himself all the time, something high-school/college me couldn’t fathom, but a few years later I can recall the first movie I saw by myself. I had been in New York a month, was walking home from a friend’s on a Sunday evening, happened to be passing the movie theater when I stopped, looked at the listings, looked at my watch, bought a ticket and went in. Since then I’ve seen dozens of movies by myself. If we always waited for someone to do something with, inevitably you spend so much more time waiting than doing. And that’s one of the first moments I felt adult.
